About the role

EDM provides engineering design and design management for energy projects, working with EPC contractors, developers and other project stakeholders. Our current portfolio includes solar PV, battery energy storage, substations, overhead lines and associated infrastructure.

We are looking for a leader who can build on this foundation, grow our services across the energy sector and strengthen our ability to deliver projects in different markets. As our clients expand across Central Asia, the Caucasus and beyond, they increasingly ask us to work with them in new markets.

The unit is also changing how it works: moving from discipline-based departments to product-focused teams and adopting more integrated, digital design methods.  You will lead these changes while taking responsibility for EDM’s business performance, client relationships and people.

This role will suit an engineering leader who understands the commercial side of the business, develops strong teams and can turn opportunities into profitable, well-delivered projects.

What you will lead

  • Clients and delivery. Lead EDM’s key client relationships, agree realistic delivery plans and keep projects on track. Address changes in scope or deadlines early, and work constructively with clients to protect quality and commercial outcomes.
  • Business performance. Take responsibility for EDM’s profit and loss (P&L) and annual business plan. Decide which opportunities to pursue, oversee clear and appropriately priced proposals, and keep contract finances, invoicing and payment collection on track.
  • Business development and new markets. Work with senior leadership to grow existing accounts, win new clients and assess opportunities for new services and markets. Understand what successful delivery requires in each country, including technical capabilities, local approvals and partnerships.
  • Product teams and ways of working. Complete the move to product-focused teams, with clear responsibilities, appropriate staffing and practical project controls. Support team leads in running day-to-day delivery and help teams work effectively across disciplines and locations.
  • Digital engineering. Lead the adoption of integrated digital design methods, including the transition from 2D to 3D where appropriate. Make sure teams have the tools, training and support to use new methods effectively, and measure the improvements in productivity, coordination and quality.
  • Quality and risk. Maintain effective design checks and reviews across disciplines. Ensure projects meet applicable international standards, local requirements and client specifications. Work with the relevant teams to agree sound contract terms and keep clear records of instructions, changes and assumptions, drawing on relevant industry practice and FIDIC-based contracts where applicable.
  • Industry relationships and compliance. Build working relationships with relevant authorities, utilities, technology providers, suppliers and engineering partners across our markets. Ensure EDM has the licences, registrations and qualified specialists required for its work, supported by local partners where appropriate.
  • People and culture. Communicate the unit’s direction and help teams understand their contribution. Work with the People team to recruit and retain strong engineers, support performance and development, and prepare people for key roles. Promote safe working practices and a culture where people can raise questions and concerns openly.

The outcomes we are looking for

  • Profitable growth. Grow EDM’s revenue and portfolio of confirmed work while maintaining healthy margins. Improve productivity through better tools, processes and teamwork, alongside well-planned hiring. Keep technical and contractual risks under control.
  • High client satisfaction. Deliver what we promise, on time, with designs that meet quality and approval requirements. Build relationships that lead to repeat work, recommendations and opportunities in new markets.
  • High staff satisfaction. Give people clear direction, fair treatment and opportunities to develop. Help product team leads take responsibility for their teams and results.
  • Broader industry leadership & impact. Strengthen EDM’s reputation as a trusted engineering partner. Share our expertise, build industry relationships and contribute to engineering practice across our markets.

Progress will be measured through a small set of indicators agreed with management following your initial review.

What success looks like

In your first year, we would expect product teams to be working effectively, clear progress in 3D design and productivity, healthy financial performance and a strong portfolio of confirmed work.

You will have built trusted relationships with key clients and partners, established clear priorities for growth across services and markets, and helped team leads take responsibility for everyday delivery. This will give you the space to focus on clients, business development and people.

Priorities and milestones will be agreed with the management following your initial review.

What you will bring

  • 10+ years of experience in engineering or environmental consultancy or similar, in technical, commercial, business development or general management roles, with a strong understanding of engineering services and project delivery.
  • 5+ years in a leadership role, leading teams and driving business growth, with responsibility for business performance, such as revenue, profitability, a P&L or major client accounts.
  • Experience working with EPC contractors and developers on complex projects.
  • A track record of developing client relationships, winning work and delivering projects profitably.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and coordinating design interfaces.
  • Familiarity with relevant international engineering standards, design assurance and contractual frameworks, including FIDIC-type contracts.
  • The ability to navigate different regulatory and approval environments, working with local specialists and partners.
  • Experience introducing new tools or ways of working and helping teams adapt.
  • Sound commercial judgement, a calm approach under pressure and the confidence to have constructive, difficult conversations with clients.
  • Professional English and the ability to lead teams and client discussions in an international environment.
